VELOURA Contemporary Abstract Rugs by Lucinda Loya
Veloura is Lucinda Loya’s contemporary abstract rug collection for The Rug Company. Rooted in fashion, artful imperfection and the beauty of contrast, the two handtufted designs bring graphic movement to a room. Designed as contemporary abstract area rugs for layered interiors, Steel offers bold definition while Cloud has a softer, more tonal presence.
VELOURA STEEL: Black and White Abstract Rug
Steel gives Veloura its clearest graphic voice. This black and white abstract rug sets irregular dark lines against a pale ground, creating a strong composition that can anchor a room without overwhelming it. Its handtufted surface has depth and movement, revealing a different character as the light shifts.

VELOURA CLOUD: Gray Abstract Rug
Cloud has a softer, more tonal presence. This gray abstract rug carries the same sense of movement as Steel through paler layers and lighter contrast, creating a quieter, more atmospheric effect. It brings texture to a room while allowing artwork, furniture and surrounding materials to remain in view.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND VELOURA
From Fashion Fragment to Rug Design
Veloura began with a familiar fashion image: torn stockings, fragmented threads and the unexpected pattern created as a fine material begins to unravel. Lucinda was drawn to the tension between something raw and something refined, allowing irregular lines and openings to become the starting point for a textile design.
The finished rug holds on to that energy, but translates it into a modern abstract rug for interiors. The result is graphic yet soft underfoot, expressive without feeling rigid, and at home in both traditional and contemporary spaces. The irregularity is intentional. It gives the design movement, character and a sense of discovery.
FROM KIPS BAY TO VELOURA
Before Veloura became a collection, it was conceived as a bespoke design for LLI’s Grand Staircase and second-floor landing at the 2024 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York. The first concept included a staircase runner and an elongated rug for the landing, drawn as a dense network of fragmented lines.
As the design evolved with The Rug Company, the pattern opened out. The intersections remained intentional, while larger areas of space gave the composition more light, movement and versatility. What began as a site-specific idea became a design that can bring the same expressive energy to a range of interiors.
