Historic Italianate Mansion Interior Design in Louisville, Kentucky | Kentucky Derby Retreat

This 1875 Italianate-style mansion in Louisville, Kentucky was reimagined as a relaxed luxury family retreat, designed for holiday gatherings and annual visits to the Kentucky Derby. The historic residence balances period authenticity with refined contemporary touches, creating an elegant yet comfortable getaway for the family.

The interiors feature an aged, muted color palette that flows seamlessly from room to room, with each hue echoed throughout the home to create visual continuity. Rich wall tones painted in Benjamin Moore’s Caviar add depth and sophistication, while layered textiles, including upholstery and accents from Scalamandré, reinforce the home’s historic character. Many furnishings and decorative objects date from the period between the home’s construction in 1875 and 1976, preserving the architectural heritage while adding layered depth to the design.

Select contemporary pieces introduce subtle contrast. In the living room, Stingray in Red, a rug designed by Alexandra Champalimaud for The Rug Company, provides a bold focal point beneath a dramatic crystal spider chandelier. Sculptural lighting from Arteriors and playful decorative elements from Stray Dog Designs add unexpected moments of character throughout the interiors.

Artful wall treatments further animate the historic spaces, with statement wallcoverings by Flavor Paper introducing modern pattern and artistic expression while complementing the home’s traditional architecture. Carefully curated art, including whimsical pieces by Mineheart and Pantone chairs provide playful pops of color .

The result is a thoughtfully restored historic Louisville mansion that honors its architectural roots while embracing contemporary design influences, offering a warm, inviting setting for family traditions, holiday gatherings, and Derby season celebrations.
